Ok so this weeks challenge was to take two or more existing songs you’ve written or partly written and create a new song by mixing and matching the verses, choruses, pre-choruses and bridges.. A very interesting idea and I, like more songwriters, have lots of song fragments and half baked ideas to pull from.
I ended up choosing a song that I liked but there was a big problem with the chorus.. I had included a town name (Temecula a town in Southern California who’s name means “Place where the Sun shines through the fog”) the problem is that I mispronounced the name badly and everyone in my songwriting workshop group picked up on it. So I tried to fix it, but the way it is supposed to be pronounced just doesn’t sound good. So then I had to dig around and find a compatible song with a chorus I could snag.. So I was madly going through my Evernote files and came across a song I had abandoned earlier this year, and Voila a song is reborn! I then nipped the bridge from a third song similarily abandoned.
It was a very interesting exercise, in it’s current form it could use some (a lot of) smoothening out and a good hard re-write, but a cool way to look at my pile of unplucked gems scattered throughout my song files and notes!
Here is the song:
Verse 1
Oh take me back to the time
When we were different people
in different frames of mind
And it seemed we could win
We threw our heads back
and caution to the wind
Now the whole world seems so foggy
and hope is just fading from view
Chorus
At the end of the line
Some things are broken, some are just fine
At the end of the line
We got here together, you left me behind
At the end of the line
Verse 2
Nothing left but excuses
And that ain’t worth anything, nothing at all
Empty words don’t paint a picture
They just leave me feeling, feeling so small
Now I retreat into memory
Everything fading to black
Chorus
At the end of the line
Some things are broken, some are just fine
At the end of the line
We got here together, you left me behind
At the end of the line
Bridge
We’re always looking for things we lost
but we can’t remember what those things cost
Chorus
At the end of the line
Some things are broken, some are just fine
At the end of the line
We got here together, you left me behind
At the end of the line
